Programs &
Activities
Baseball Clinics
Free youth baseball clinics are sponsored by Foundation throughout the
year. Former players from Major League Baseball spend the day sharing their skills and techniques in
hitting, pitching, catching and base running with over two hundred
elementary, middle school and high school athletes. Veteran players from
the Negro Leagues are on hand to share the zeal of the new generation of
baseball enthusiasts. Baseball trivia, history of the game, lunch, free
prizes and gifts, certificates of completion and acknowledgements are
integrated into the six-hour day.
Baseball Workshops
Free youth baseball workshops are held throughout the year at
participating elementary and secondary schools and span two to three
days per week. The Foundation works in conjunction with the baseball coaches to
create a plan of action to best support their teams. Former
players from both the Negro Baseball Leagues and Major League Baseball spend the day sharing their skills
and techniques in hitting, pitching, catching and base running. Academic
tutoring, baseball trivia, history of the game and certificates of
completion are integrated into the days of training. In the summer
of 2008, The Remembering When Foundation and The Los Angeles Urban
League are teaming up to train & educate members of the Crenshaw High
School baseball community.
The Game of the Century
The Game of the Century is a full 9-inning baseball game played by
former African American and Latino Major League Baseball players and
Hall of Famers who honor the Old Negro League players, some of whom will
be present at the celebration. The Black Baseball Players Association
hosts the Game of the Century at a nationally recognized stadium and the
event is more than just a baseball game. It is the culmination of weekly
activities that include community outreach, in-school programs, free
baseball clinics and other events that will assist in educating our
youth about the Negro Leagues. The Game of the Century honors the
legends of the Negro Leagues while offering participation in a community
celebration that builds a sense of pride, unity and self-respect among
the African American and Latino communities. The youth who participate
in the week-of festivities are acknowledged at The Game of the Century
and are sponsored by the Remembering When Foundation. |
